Its been a while since I wrote something, anything on this blog... so much has been happening over the last few years... so here is something that is not directly related to massage, but...

Abuse

I was a severely abused child. Mentally, verbally, and physically. I have the emotional scars to prove it. I know what its like to feel helpless, abandoned, useless, and unloved. I've been thrown through walls, doors, tossed down stairs, punched, kicked... I've been called names, called fat, worthless, an a useless piece of shit... “you will never amount to anything”... yup, I've heard it all... The saddest part of this all is that this was a normal occurrence in my childhood life... it never leaves my mind, even as an adult.
No one should ever feel this way... ever. The worst part of this is that it wasn't an uncle or a friend of the family, but my own flesh and blood. My father... He was truly a horrible person. What makes it worse is that thee were moments when he was nice. He gave me wonderful things and took me to wonderful places. Fishing trips, camping trips, our summers seemed filled with fun. I guess I realize now that a lot of it may have been just guilt driven.
I know I never did anything wrong that would have deserved being punched in the face, having to go to school with a shiner the size of a small island... and yes, “I walked into... something” because “if you tell anyone, I will beat the shit out of you again!” hearing this as a child was one of the worst things ever... you know they are going to beat you for nothing anyways, but still... Hes telling me “I'm going to beat the shit out of you... you little piece of shit” “you worthless fuck”
I wish I could say that this was all made up in my mind, but I cant. Even as an adult I have others that have seen and heard things. Moments in my life even I don't remember. My sister recently said she remembers sitting on the floor, as a child, playing with our sister. I was walking down the hallway and he came out of know where. He punched me so hard that I flew back into the closet. She said that she saw me fly through the door of the closet... she said there was no reason for this, but he was angry at me for something. This moment in my childhood, I don't remember. I have no recollection of this whats so ever... none... this is not the only moment that she can recall. My aunt has also seen things. There was a moment when we were kids that my aunt and uncle drove a mudbogger. Fun times there. She remembers me being beaten during one of these camping weekend. She tried to intervene, telling him to stop beating me, but he didn't. He only told her to shut the fuck up or he would do the same to her... I guess her friend came out of the woodwork that day.... promised him if he laid a hand on her or me again he would never leave the woods... that's scary, even as an adult hearing that...

You know the sick thing is, he claims to have never done anything to me... he doesn't know why I am making it all up...
Recently, with passing of my grandmother, stories have been rising from the woodwork. I heard a story of my father being beaten on the lawn of his childhood home by his father. My grandfather, who use to beat us kids with a yellow whiffleball bat, for nothing more than being kids... I heard he was hitting him so hard that he actually had his first heart attack right there on the lawn...
father abuses son... son becomes a father... father abuses son... seems like a really bad after school special... and a chain that I luckily broke. There are many memories I have from my childhood of abuse. I try to let them go, but still some days are worse than others.
I am glad that I am NOT like my father, or whoever he actually was.
My aunt, at my grandmothers services actually tried to force me to talk to him. “it's what your grandmother would have wanted” “do it for her” “you'll regret it later”
he actually tried to shake my hand and thank me for coming to his mothers service...
my response was “my grandmother!”
oh I cant tell you how badly I really do want to bury the hatchet... deep within his skull.
He hurt me for so many years, he treated me like garbage, hes treated most people that have been in his life like garbage... my step mom... I know he hit her, I know he abused her, I know he cheated on her, I know she stayed because of us... the kids... yup, I live with that...
my biological mother its about the same as he was... she let her, now dead, ex boyfriend terrorize my sister and I. He was abusive, angry, and mean as hell... she just chalked it up to us being horrible kids. I remember he pinching and slapping me, calling me names, and blah blah, blah... but I think the worst was when her bf was on top of my little sister, beating the shit out of her... he had pinned her to the floor in front of the couch and was slapping her in the face, calling her names, and he wasn't stopping. I think I was 13/14? I remember screaming at him to get off my sister, trying to pull him off of her and screaming at her to run... I remember doing anything I could to get him off of her. She got free and grabbed a baseball bat. I screamed at her to run and get out... we rolled around on the floor a bit. I was stronger than him, maybe just so filled with rage. He had hurt me and my sister for too long!!! I remember wanting to kill him, I didn't care of the consequences. I just wanted to beat the shit out of his face... I pounded him as much as I possibly could, I don't remember stopping, I don't remember his hits even affecting me... I remember the words...” you fat piece of shit, I'm going to beat the fuck out of you, I'm going to kill you, you little fat fuck, you worthless piece of shit”... yup
The kicker is, when it was over, the police wanted to take me into custody... because it was all my fault... yup
I have quite a few memories of that “family” as well...
I don't talk to my parents, I don't recognize them as my parents, they gave birth to me, and abused me...
that about what I've got..

My grandmothers services brought all kinds of things out and I'm sure there will be more as the days, weeks, and years move on...
my cousin... years ago I heard a rumor that filtered through the family. It was years after and I was the last to know, funny how that happens, it caused me to stop talking and associating with most of them. Its caused me some emotional baggage... I guess she claims I touched her as a child. I'm not sure of how deeply this story goes, but I can only imagine... this cousin and I were never close, never alone together, and I'm not sure either one of us liked each other... so I'm not sure how something could have ever happened... It didn't.. I know this... but rumors, as we know how they are... speaks of someone else in the family actually touching her and even worse. This one has the same name as I do... brothers as I heard. Wasn't the first time, wasn't the first cousin... but I'm the one named... so I don't talk to her, to her parents, or the family. Makes for really uncomfortable services... and the two that possibly did this... are really messed up... drugs, alcohol, you name it... and I'm the black sheep... yup

Children
As a father, I understand guilt driven... I find myself buying my sons things to make up for the problems they have with their own mom. They seem to have nothing there and the stuff they do have is threatened to be thrown away or just sometimes tossed to make some point. So I do what I think is right and buy something to take the place of what they don't have there. I take them on adventures, out for ice cream, anywhere that I can afford, and sometimes cant...
They have been in and out of counseling for similar issues that I had as a child. I've heard stories of abuse (mental, physical, and verbal). Yes DCYF has been involved... many times... always “unfounded” or “doesn't rise to the level.” Doesn't rise to the level of what? Someone that is suppose to love them, cherish them, and take care of them is hitting them, abusing them... verbally assaulting them, verbally assaulting their father, forcing them to write out pages of words in a barely lit damp cold basement, forcing them to do military “bear crawls shirtless, while hitting them with a belt.” yup... but none of that rises to the level... they've come home with bruises that they don't want to talk about and if they do they are in fear of telling anyone because they will get into more trouble. Their mom actually tells them “do NOT tell your father what goes on in this house,” “your dad doesn't love you,” “your dad hurt me,” “ your father is a fat useless piece of shit'” (seems everyone likes to use that one),
I had taken my youngest to a parent teacher conference. He was so happy to take me into his classroom and show me all the work he had done. We got into the room and he quickly stopped and backed into me... They we both there... his mom and his “Step father.” he was scared. He didn't know they were going to be there and neither did I. The conversation was all about how “we love you” and “want the best for you” “whats the matter bud? Why do you not like school” “why do you not want any friends?” “why are you not doing your classwork, following directions, listening?” “what can we do to help?” “we want you to succeed.”
Now all of this was hard, even for me... with all I know and have heard from this child. I sat there pretty quiet... I was uneasy and even his teacher knew it. We talked the day after about it. We talk almost every few days as it was. I knew what was going on and so did she, and so did the last three teachers that he had... I sat through this meeting. The whole time my son was physically shaken by the presence in the room. The meeting wrapped up and we left together. He didn't say much until be were driving down the road to home. He ask why they were there. Why they acted like they cared about him. He said they didn't care about him and that they he felt like they didn't love him. He said they hurt him and make him feel bad, about himself, about his dad, about school. He said that he was told he was “a stupid kid” he was a “bad kid” and he was “just like his dad.” Heartbreaking... hearing a child say things like this... He asked if he could just stay home and never go back to that house. He said he hated it there. He was treated like a baby and he was always treated bad by his mom, his step dad, and his siblings in that family. He said that his mom yelled at him all the time. That she made him take care of hos baby sister that he hated. I'm sure he didn't mean that, but hes not feeling well about things there. He talked about a moment years ago when his mom, him, and his brothers were at the local farmers market. His mom was mad at him and she grabbed his hand, twisted his wrist, and forced him to the ground. “She hurt me, she hates me, I'm a bad kid.” This was a story I had heard a few years ago from not just him but both of his brothers. Three, almost identical stories from three completely different children... it never seems to stop... even when DCYF, the police department, and counselors, school, and others are involved. It gets better for a little bit, then it goes right back into the same...
All three of my sons have similar issues with their mothers... for my oldest, it seems to had gotten so bad that the tables turned, he became a different person, smoked, drank, and turned on me... the only one that seemed to not have hurt him. It got so bad. Suicidal ideations, homicidal thoughts, even thoughts of killing me... he was dirty, disheveled, his room was a disaster, the smell was unbearable... and now he lives with the one that caused all of that.. His mother... more abuse, more neglect, more damage... and all I can do is let go and hope that someday he thinks clearly and gets a grip on his life... another chapter...

As an adult it hasn't changed much, different people, different relationship statuses, and different forms of abuse.., I've heard it all... I've been punched and kicked and slapped by those who swore they loved me. I've been cheated on and had the tables turned around as I was the one cheating... I've heard horrible lies and stories told by those people after the relationships ended, how I abused them, how I forced them to do horrible things, and how I treated them so badly... I even recently heard the “R” word used from a relationship that almost broke me mentally and physically. It almost distinguished my inner light... I feel it may have damaged part of my soul and I find myself questioning everything I hear... the good and the bad...Its not just friends and friends of friends or even those I don't know. Its family, blood, my children... Yeah... Me... the big bad guy... I was told once “who do you think they are going to believe? You? This big beast of a man? Or me? A tiny little woman that couldn't defend herself. Someone that couldn't or wouldn't hurt anyone...” Those words have stuck with me since... Like a hammer driving a nail... That relationship cost me quite a bit.. financially it destroyed me. It hurt my business, some of which I'm sure was caused by made up stories told after the fact.. I lost friends... loved ones... I lost stuff... everything “we” built together was taken... and I hear that she left with nothing... yup
I laugh and say that the only thing not taken was my children and my drums... the sad thing is that's about it... everything that was left other than that was just garbage she didn't want... me being one of them...
my children have heard that I don't work, I'm lazy, I'm a piece of shit, I'm stupid, I hurt people, I hurt their mom... and I still hear it... not only is the damage still being done too me, but my children as well...
I feel I could write a book on that whole relationship. It would be something that no one would ever believe.. I don't even believe it...
None of which is true, I treated her as I've treated anyone in my life, especially someone I loved. I cherished her as my equal or better, I was caring, giving, and I worked really hard to try to give her everything she needed and wanted. There was never any abuse, no physical, no mental, no verbal, and no not sexual (yes, this one came up recently, from my 12 year old)... No I never cheated... I don't lie... I could bring myself to hurt someone, anyone like that, especially someone I cared about so deeply... every word and action has been turned around and used to the advantage of someone that wants to appear to be the victim... but its still another dig on my already beaten and damaged mind... Ive been broken down so many times that really I should just give up... Right? I should do exactly what those people want me to do.. Hurt someone, become the person they want to believe and have told others I am, kill myself? Yup I even heard this one as well... in court, through friends, even through family... She tells people that I tried once, but was too much of a coward to pull the trigger... Its never been a thought in my mind. That's not an option for me...I was not put here to become that person. I was put here to help. I am a good person.. I am human, I make mistakes, but I am good... I am the light

so if you hear a well put together story, its probably just that... a well put together and thought out story... no truth or merit to it, at all... its sad actually that someone would want to hurt their own soul by lying... you have to pay for those lies some day...

I pray that those who have done such horrible things get help, seek out counseling, ask for forgiveness, and mean it... the damage done is not just mental.. it affects the body as well as the mind... its crippling and debilitating... I will pray for you. I will pray that you are given the gift of healing... for you and those you have hurt...

My loves are hurting... some things, most of it, I cant even talk about... someone has hurt them, they have been abused, they have been neglected, they feel as its their fault for staying in unhealthy relationships... physically, mentally, verbally, and sexually... and we all know these people... they are our family, our friends, our loved ones...
they are scared, they feel alone, they feel worthless, and they are tired of fighting... their heads are filled with these thoughts and others. It makes their days hard to get anything done, makes them feel like they are not loved... and I know this doesn't even scratch the surface...
Please, Please, Please send out blessings of love and light to them. Send out blessings of love and light to all of your friends, your family, even those you don't know... you may not realize, but everyone is hurting right now. Step up, step out, and help.
Call someone, text someone, offer a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, a hug... it could save a life. It could be the start of some much needed healing therapy... Don't just try... Do it!!!

I am not a religious person, I have my own beliefs, I am spiritual...I am Native, yes there is native blood running though this body... I do believe there is something greater than us... greater than me... I don't judge others on their religions... all religions are naturally the same... “LOVE” be kind, do good, think of others... its all basic principals that we should all live by...

I teach my sons “treat others as you want to be treated” I expect them to do so, although I have been spoken to many times and told that you can raise a child to be the best they can be and yet they will still make mistakes and they can choose to be the opposite of what you have taught them...

Luckily for me, I found out early on how not to treat people. I use my knowledge to help others with their own demons. No, I cant cure anyone, I am not a doctor... I am the light... Ive been there, Ive struggled, and some days I still struggle... I am human.

You are loved, you are wonderful, and you are wanted...

Why am I telling you all of this? Why am I putting this all out there for the whole world to read? Is this everything? far from it... just a jumbled bunch of words from my head... hoping it reaches someone... anyone.. just to let YOU are not alone... YOU are loved!!! YOU are wanted!!! YOU are enough!!! And YOU... Yes YOU can do it!!! and if you need, reach out, reach out to me, I will talk, I will listen, I will be present...

Love and light... A'ho

Holiday Stress!!!

Tis the season to break out of the mold and buy everything known to mankind for all of our loved ones... break the bank... break the budget.. and totally break down and end up in the loony bin..
.
How do we avoid this? Read this short little article provided by the editorial staff of Massage & Bodyworks magazine...

Holiday Stress
Tips to Stay On Top

Here "it" comes -- holiday stress. As families negotiate where to spend Thanksgiving, and millions of us are making the empty promise to ourselves to start early on holiday shopping, the anxiety begins to build. And it only gets crazier from here. Choir practice for the kids, family gatherings at every turn, office parties, treks to the mall, baking...you know where this is headed. So what can you do about it? You may not be able to control the chaos of the season, but there are some steps to make sure you survive it unscathed.

1.Take time for yourself. YES, get a massage.
Soak in a mineral bath. Listen to the silence of a snowfall. Even if there seems no possible moment you can claim as your own, close your eyes, breathe deep from your belly several times, exhaling the air loudly from your mouth. Do this whenever you need a "moment."

2. Utilize catalog/online shopping. Don't fight the crowds. From the convenience of your home or during an office lunch hour, catalog and online shopping can eliminate the headache of holiday stress tenfold.

3. Eat right. Some of the best goodies come out this time of year. While you shouldn't deny yourself the opportunity to have a piece of grandma's pumpkin pie, don't overdo it. Remember to eat plenty of vegies and fruits to help stave off the winter's bombardment of colds.

4. Give yourself the advantage. Consumption of alcohol, nicotine, drugs and caffeine elicit the body's stress reaction. Remember moderation; you'll be happier and calmer in the long run.

5. Don't skimp on the exercise...but allow yourself to be excused from the routine when need be. Exercise helps melt the stress away and can provide that moment of clarity in a hectic day.

6. Don't try to be Martha Stewart. It's easy to get caught up in the spirit of the holidays with new decorating ideas, fancy dinners and the whim to make all your gifts this year. Be realistic and honest with yourself. Don't set yourself up for failure. Hire a caterer. Have friends help by having a craft day. Forgo making the gift wreath and give a gift you'll know they'll appreciate -- a massage.

7. Remember the spirit. When it's all said and done, no one will remember that the turkey was a little dry, that the sweater didn't fit, or that you were a few minutes late for rehearsal. What do they remember? The precious moments with family and friends.

So... please remember, at the end of all of our holiday traditions we need to sit back, relax, and enjoy what truly matters... Family, friends, a cup of hot cocoa, a slice of warm apple pie, and a nice relaxing massage... Enjoy your holidays!!!

This is my dear friend

 Ryan Nardontonia...

He is a great guy, but most possibly crazy as hell!!!

I'm Going to Ride my Bicycle from Boston to Magee Hospital In Philadephia to visit Tyson (yes, that's 350+ miles)

Hi, I'm Ryan Nardontonia; amongst other things, I ride bicycles.

While swimming at a picnic on August 4th Tyson Snader shattered his 7th vertebrae and fractured his 5th-6th. Lacey Snader, my friend and his wife noticed he was struggling and he was dragged from the water. He underwent emergency surgery and doctors now expect (little do they know) that the muscles below his chest will remain paralyzed.
Tyson and Lacey had been married for two months prior to the picnic; a fun event they were sharing with their son, Hudson. Yes, this is a tragic story of the attempted derailment of newfound exuberance - let it sink in.
Tyson has great company in overcoming this. As long as I've known Lacey she's had a beautiful resolve. Like anyone, they'll need help funding medical bills and an accessible home and car.
In all likelihood, it's physically impossible to ride this far. Tyson's been told similar. Fittingly then, In one piece or otherwise, I will meet Tyson at Magee on October 14th.
Rally Name: Cycle for Snader, a Do Good & Ride Bikes Effort Become a fundraiser
Number of supporters: 33
Rally Leader: Ryan Nardontonia

Please join me in helping Ryan make a difference... He's doing the hard work, let's do some simple math...

The season for runners, triathletes, and the likes is off and "running"... pun intended. The need for optimal training, diet, and recovery is at hand... or feet... back... Well you get it!
I am constantly asked "How can I become better, faster, slimmer?" The answer is not an easy one. Most of us try as hard as we can to eat healthy and exercise regularly to keep us going. What all of us forget is maintenance. Obviously I am a huge supporter of massage, always have been and always will be. Added to the, dare I say, "alternative" approach to health of massage is chiropractic, acupuncture, and a good stretching regimen. These are just a few off the top of my head. Most top athletes know the benefits of all these and more, but do you?  When was the last time you had a massage? When was the last time you saw a chiropractor? (who is by the way a doctor... DC.. Doctor of Chiropractic) When was the last time you stretched for more than a few minutes? If it wasn't this week or last, you really are missing out on a key part of your training. "But it cost so much!" Does it? How much is your health worth to you? As a society of smokers, drinkers, eaters and couch potatoes, its amazing that we can afford anything at all! Do you want to be a better athlete or to be the best you can be? Take some advice... Add massage and chiropractic to your training regimen... its worth its weight in gold! Not only will you be a better athlete, but you will feel better and recover faster. I take your health seriously and you should as well!

This article touches some key points for the athlete and massage.

Massage- The Post-Workout Ritual of the Pros

I found this article about post-workout massage:
Finally, a "manly" excuse to get a massage: It refuels your workout. According to a new study, a post-sweat rubdown promotes recovery and relieves pain in the same way anti-inflammatory meds (ie: ibuprofen) do.

In the study, 11 guys biked to exhaustion. Afterwards, they had just one of their legs massaged. The kneaded leg had fewer signs of muscle inflammation—which lead to soreness—than untouched leg.
How come? When you work out hard (think: The Spartacus Workout), your muscles tear, releasing pro-inflammatory substances that make them ache. “Massage improves your body’s ability to make the proteins needed for energy that goes towards rebuilding muscles torn or strained during a workout,” says Simon Melov, Ph.D., and lead researcher of the study.

So when should you hit up a masseuse? Melov says that the pros are onto something. Ever seen a guy fresh off the field headed to a trainer’s table? It makes sense: The study found that the largest differences in inflammation were seen in having a massage immediately after a tough workout.

Massage Away Your Stress Hormones

Another reason to get a massage:

Massage, both light and deep-tissue, has surprising health benefits. Sure, it feels great and can relax and energize your muscles. But now researchers at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles have completed a study that shows that massage affects your hormones in important ways.

What are hormones and why should you care? Hormones are basically chemicals in the cells of your body. A hormone is a kind of signal sent out from one cell to your other cells that can affect your body's metabolism-- the chemical reactions that affect, for example, how you feel.

And that's what the study shows massage can do for you-- change how you feel, and for the better. 53 lucky test subjects, according to a New York Times article, had either a 45 minute light massage, or a deep-tissue Swedish massage.

Blood samples taken before and after showed that those that received a light massage gained more oxytocin—our body's natural feel-good hormone, and a reduction in “adrenal corticotropin hormone, which stimulates the adrenal glands” to release the stress hormone cortisol. When cortisol, also known as hydrocortisone, is released, it suppresses your immune system and can increase your blood sugar.

Those that had a deep-tissue Swedish massage showed an impressive reduction in cortisol and another hormone that may increase cortisol. On top of that, there was an increase in lymphocytes, or white blood cells, that are part of your immune system.

It's one of those seemingly rare cases of something that feels good for you and turns out to actually be good for you. How often does that happen? The new study is a vindication for massage therapy, a practice with a history going back to ancient Mesopotamia that is too often dismissed as having no real health benefits.

Massage: A Cure for Your Back Pain?

A weekly massage can be even more effective at relieving back pain than the usual treatments, like painkillers, drugs, and physical therapy, according to a new study in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

Researchers found that when people with chronic back pain added a weekly massage to their standard care regimen, nearly one third of them experienced a reduction in pain—or a complete recovery—at the end of 10 weeks. They also found themselves using fewer anti-inflammatory meds than a second group of people who didn’t opt for the massage.

Surprisingly, the study didn’t find that one type of massage had more health benefits than the other: People who received the common “Swedish”-type rub down experienced the same reduction in pain than those who had “structural massages” (a more specialized technique aimed at correcting soft tissue abnormalities).

Even though the researchers, led by Daniel C. Cherkin, Ph.D., a senior investigator at the Group Health Research Institute, are still stumped on how a rubdown offers relief, they remain convinced of massage’s merits.

“Historically, people pooh-poohed massage as a ‘feel good’ treatment, suggesting that it’s not really valid or worth paying for. But in fact, a significant number of people with chronic back pain that hasn’t responded to other treatments are getting benefits from massage,” he says.

Still, there’s no need to run to the massage table at the first tinge of pain. Oftentimes, back pain goes away on it’s own within a few days and weeks, says Cherkin. Plus, the usual treatments can work well for many people. But if the pain hasn’t subsided after a month, it might be time to try getting a weekly massage—especially if you haven’t responded to the normal types of therapy, he says.

Bonus: Structural massage is sometimes covered by insurance companies.

Massage: What Feels Great and Prevents Colds?

Sure, you could consume large quantities of vitamin C or slather your body in antibacterial soap to ward off germs this cold and flu season, but here’s a remedy we think you’ll like better: Get a massage.

Turns out, massages not only feel great, they might be good for your health, too. According to a study published in The Journal of Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, a massage may boost your immune system and help you better cope with stress.

The researchers divided more than 50 participants in to two groups: one that received a traditional Swedish massage and another that received a session of light touch, but didn’t include any actual massage-therapy techniques. After each 45-minute session, blood samples were taken. When compared to the light touch group, the people that received the Swedish massage experienced a significant increase in their lymphocytes—white blood cells that play a large role in protecting the body against disease—and a decrease in their levels of the stress hormones.

“We found that biological changes occur as a result of even a single session of massage, and that these changes may benefit even a healthy individual,” says Mark Hyman Rapaport, MD, one of the study’s authors and a professor and chairman of the department of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Although full-body massages yielded the best immune support in this study, other research has found that a simple five-minute hand massage was able to lower stress levels as well.

Men's Health: Fix it With Massage

I found this article today in Men's Health and thought I would share:

Massages are more than just indulgences. They're proven health and mood treatments. Read on to find out how they can benefit you.

Neck Pain:
See a 55 percent improvement after this regimen, according to a 2009 study in the Clinical Journal of Pain. They even scored 39 percent better on the worst-sounding test ever, the Neck Disability Index. (It assesses the pain's impact.)

Athletic Performance:
"Musculotendinous" massages target muscle-tendon junctions, and a 2010 study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that even a 30-second round improved hip-flexor range of motion.

Stress:
You don't need a full-body rubdown to feel good. In a 2010 study from Sweden, one 80-minute hand-and-foot massage significantly lowered people's heart rates, cortisol levels, and insulin levels—all of which help lower stress

Depression:
Take your pick: Swedish, shiatsu, and other massage types may ease depression, a 2010 meta-analysis in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found. How? Massages reduce stress hormone levels, heart rate, and blood pressure, and boost mood and relaxation by triggering the release of oxytocin and serotonin.

High Blood Pressure:
A study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that after people with normal blood pressure had deep-tissue massage for 45 to 60 minutes, their BPs fell—specifically, by an average of 10.4 millimeters of mercury (mm/Hg) systolic, and 5.3 mm/Hg diastolic

Lower Back Pain:
Back problems can be complex. One solution is simple: Common massage techniques can help you relax, and trigger an endorphin release that raises your threshold for pain. And that might help people with all sorts of lower-back pain, notes a 2009 meta-analysis in the journal Spine.

Constipation:
Would you like an abdominal massage with that laxative? Yes, you would: A 2009 Swedish study found that people who received a massage along with traditional constipation treatment felt significantly better than those who stuck with just laxatives.

Some Office Policies You Should Be Aware Of:

Cancellation Policy
I understand that unanticipated events happen occasionally in everyone’s life. In my desire to be effective and fair to all clients, the following policies are honored:

24 hour advance notice is required when cancelling an appointment. This allows the opportunity for someone else to schedule an appointment. If you are unable to give us 24 hours advance notice you will be charged the full amount of your appointment. This amount must be paid prior to your next scheduled appointment.

No-shows
Anyone who either forgets or consciously chooses to forgo their appointment for whatever reason will be considered a “no-show.” They will be charged for their “missed” appointment.

Late Arrivals
If you arrive late, your session may be shortened in order to accommodate others whose appointments follow yours. Depending upon how late you arrive, your therapist will then determine if there is enough time remaining to start a treatment. Regardless of the length of the treatment actually given, you will be responsible for the “full” session. Out of respect and consideration to your therapist and other customers, please plan accordingly and be on time.

A Common Question From Clients: Clothing

As I have taken on new clients, I find that many of them ask the same questions.  One that is normally asked is whether or not they, as the client, need to be completely undressed for their massage.

The short answer is no.

Here is the Long Answer:

As a massage therapist, one of my goals is for my client to be comfortable, both physically and mentally. A client should never have to be naked if they do not wish to be, nor should they feel obligated to explain to their therapist why they wish not to be- this, just like receiving a massage- is a personal choice and should be respected.  Anyone who has experienced otherwise from their therapist should find a new one.

Your therapist should also provide you with ample privacy to undress or change and climb under the sheet and/or blankets on the table.   You should be allowed a few moments to get comfortable on the table and in your surroundings, before you ask your therapist to begin.  (This should go without saying, however I will say it anyways, my table is always cleaned prior to a clients arrival and fresh, clean linens are then placed over top for EACH client-it is inappropriate and rather uncomfortable for you to have direct contact with the vinyl.)

That having been said, there are certain times where less is more.  For instance- a hot stone massage can become more difficult with the additional layers. Although possible, the effect may not be the same.  It can also be more difficult to provide proper back work if the client chooses to keep their shirt on.

One of my main concerned when my client chooses not to fully undress is having the oils or product I am using on their skin stain their clothing.  This is why I always suggest to my clients that, should they chose to remain partially dressed,  it may be best to wear clothing they are not concerned about staining like an old t-shirt and gym shorts.

There are also times when it is far more convenient for my clients to remain fully or semi-dressed.  Massage requires draping of the body- covering private areas with a sheet- and, depending on the type of massage, can be time consuming and difficult.  I work a lot with athletes- providing them with both massage and stretching- and especially during the latter, it is far easier for them to wear athletic shorts and a snug top.  This allows for a better range of motion, without fear of exposing my client.

There are also times when there is absolutely no need for the client to be undressed.  A chair massage for instance is specifically designed for times when the client getting undressed would be inappropriate- such as in an office setting, or a waste of time- like during a massage on your lunch break.  I also offer hand and foot massages, and all that the client would need to do is roll up their sleeves or pants.  Also, regardless of whether I am using my table or chair, when I work at races, health fairs, etc, my clients remain clothed- for the sake of time and cleanlyness.

As always, whatever choice my client makes regarding how undressed they are during their massage is a choice I will always respect and will fully support.  Besides providing them with a great massage I always want my clients to be confortable around me and in my office.

April 7, 2011- The Big Lake Half Marathon

Yesterday was the Big Lake Half Marathon at Alton Bay.  What a beautiful day!  The forcast had called for rain, but it held off until the last athlete got their massage and had left the tent. The morning started off a little chilly, but the day stayed comfortable with a cool breeze coming off the lake.  We set up and things got moving.

The runners waiting at the starting line...and trying to stay warm

Our Sign

Chatting with some awesome volunteers... (there I am in my signature color)

Amber turning on the heater...no one likes a cold athlete!

The view from our Massage Tent

We couldn't have asked for a better day.  The race started off great... lots of runners.....

....some of whom did the YMCA dance as the song pounded out of the speakers.

I always love watching the runners and their families, friends and supporters help make the event really special.  Without them these events would not have the same energy.  Children cheering their parenting with signs.... the sound of cheers. Its amazing to watch!   Its a wonder more people don't do these events.

I always remember that without volunteers these races would not exist.  The volunteers are amazing. They take time out of their lives to be here and it means a lot to them.

The althetes finished their run and began to line up!  The day warmed up and we didn't have to worry about anyone getting a chill- not so fun when your body is exhausted.

The first Athletes begin to arrive...ready to relax and get stretched out...

Our line is getting longer...

We had some visitors at the massage tent!

The last clients of the day!  Way to go Everyone!

This handsome fellow is Macaroni...he belonged to one of the runners and was more than happy to give people kisses and let them pet him!

Our tent was pretty busy! Which makes my day better.  I get to meet new people, see old faces and work along side people in my field, whom I love and respect and have come to know as a second family!  Here is a glimpse of what we did!

We started off by working on each other.... and then we got down to business

This is Virginia... if she was your LMT and you would like to contact her please call Vital Kneads to get her contact information.

This is Amber.  She is the owner of Vital Kneads to contact her call (603)527-8053.

There I am! If you wish to contact me please call (603) 753-4295 or (603)470-4295 or email me at rh.massage_therapy@yahoo.com

The sky started to get dark but we kept going...

All and all the day was perfect.  It rained later on, but everything was packed up and all of the athletes received a much needed massage (it always seems to rain just as we pack up our tables).  These people are amazing.  Helping them is what I love doing.  Knowing I have helped them makes this job worth it.  Now off to the next race... see you then!
